LGBTQ+ Family Building Options

Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin recognizes the LGBTQ+ community, who may be on a different journey to parenthood and choose to expand their family beyond traditional conception.

Whether you are starting your family or adding to it, the Reproductive Medicine Center physicians and staff are available to assist the LGBTQ+ population and help understand all the family building options and proceed with a plan to reach your unique goals.

Getting Started with LGBTQ+ Family Building and Planning

All patients will have an initial consultation with their physician to discuss their medical history, potential treatment options and financial options. Your physician will order diagnostic testing and screening to develop an individualized treatment plan.

LGBTQ+ Fertility and Family Building Options  

Our Reproductive Medicine Center offers multiple family building and fertility options for people of all genders and sexualities, including lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, nonbinary and more.

• All of the fertility and reproduction options meet Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations. The FDA testing and screening and donor eligibility determination is required in most situations.
• Psychological screening is required with any patient using a donor or a gestational carrier.
• Parenting Agreements are required for directed tissue donation and when using a gestational carrier, as well as most other situations.

Lesbian Couple or Single Woman Family Building

• Directed sperm donor with intrauterine inseminations or in vitro fertilization
• Anonymous sperm donor with intrauterine inseminations or in vitro fertilization
• Directed or anonymous embryo donation
• Adoption

Gay Couple or Single Man Family Building

• 
  Anonymous or directed embryo donation with a gestational carrier
• Anonymous or directed egg donor with a gestational carrier
• Adoption

Bisexual Couple Family Building

• Multiple options discussed at consultation

Transgender Man With Woman Partner Family Building

• Directed or anonymous sperm donor and intrauterine insemination
• Directed or anonymous sperm donor and in vitro fertilization
• Directed or anonymous embryo donation
• Egg or embryo freezing
• Discontinue hormones for intrauterine insemination or in vitro fertilization with donor sperm and/or to carry the pregnancy
• If no partner, freeze your eggs or use donor eggs, sperm donor, or donor embryo, and a gestational carrier
• Adoption

Transgender Man With Man Partner Family Building

• Freeze your eggs for future fertilization and use of a gestational carrier
• In vitro fertilization with a partner’s sperm or donor sperm and the use of a gestational carrier
• Discontinue hormones for intercourse, intrauterine insemination, or in vitro fertilization and/or to carry the pregnancy
• Egg donation with a partner’s sperm or donor sperm and use of a gestational carrier
• If no partner, freeze your eggs or use donor eggs, partner or donor sperm, or donor embryo and a gestational carrier
• Adoption

Transgender Woman With Woman Partner Family Building

• 
  Freeze sperm for future use in partner
• Directed or anonymous donor sperm
• Directed or anonymous embryo donation
• In vitro fertilization with donor sperm
• If no partner, freeze sperm or use donor sperm or embryo donation and use a gestational carrier
